A Cozy Cottage Bedroom with a Crackling Fireplace

Stone walls, blackened beams and a little cast-iron stove set the scene; a brass bed piled with quilts and cable-knit throws, floral drapes and a cushioned window seat finish it. It smells like woodsmoke just looking at it.

The idea behind it

Cottage rooms are additive — quilts over blankets, prints beside candles, cushions on the window seat. The trick is keeping everything within faded, tea-stained tones.

The stove and candlelight supply the colour temperature; nothing here is brighter than flame.

What you will need

  • Cast-iron wood stove, or a high-quality electric equivalent in the hearth

  • Antique brass or iron bed, with visible rails and a little patina

  • Floral quilt and cable-knit throw, faded rose patterns under chunky cream wool

  • Cushioned window seat, plaid cushions and a place for tea

Steal the look

  1. Step 1

Anchor the room around the hearth, not the TV wall

  2. Step 2

Choose an iron or brass bedframe over upholstery

  3. Step 3

Layer a floral quilt, then a heavy knitted throw

  4. Step 4

Dress windows in floral curtains with tie-backs

  5. Step 5

Light with candles, a pleated lamp and firelight only

Perfect for

  • Period cottages with working chimneys
  • Quilt collectors and blanket hoarders
  • Cold-climate hibernators
  • Anyone soothed by firelight and low beams

Avoid if

  • Sleek modern minimalism is your comfort
  • No flue and no appetite for an electric stove
  • Florals simply aren’t you

Nothing in a cottage bedroom should look new. If it doesn’t look inherited, age it with use.
