A Grey Shaker Kitchen with a Crittall Screen and Brass Pulls

Slate shakers aged with brass, marble subway behind a black range, and a Crittall screen trading light with the stained-glass hall: the terrace kitchen at its confident best.

The idea behind it

The scheme is a study in borrowed period grammar: shaker frames, cup pulls, subway bond, steel glazing — each element has a century of precedent, so the new kitchen lands as restoration rather than fashion. Formulas become classics for a reason.

Black is the connective thread — range, screen grid, sconce stems, stool legs — stitching grey and brass into one tailored outfit. Count the black lines in any great kitchen photograph; they are rarely accidental.

What you will need

  • Slate-grey shaker cabinetry, Full-height range wall and panelled island

  • Brass cup pulls and knobs, Unlacquered hardware left to patina

  • Crittall-style glazed screen, Black steel partition to the hallway

  • Marble subway splashback, Veined tile in running bond behind the range

  • Black range cooker, The working anchor under a shaker hood

  • Quartz counters and bridge tap, Pale stone with brass at the island sink

  • Picture-light sconces, Brass shades washing tile and shelves

Steal the look

  1. Step 1

Fit slate-grey shakers with full-height storage on the range wall and a panelled island opposite.

  2. Step 2

Tile the cook wall in marble subway to hood height, running bond, pale grout.

  3. Step 3

Install the black range with a pull-out larder beside and pan drawers below the island.

  4. Step 4

Replace the hall wall with a Crittall-style glazed screen aligned to the door's sightline.

  5. Step 5

Fit unlacquered brass cup pulls, knobs, bridge tap and picture-light sconces.

  6. Step 6

Top with pale quartz and pull two leather stools to the island overhang.

  7. Step 7

Keep oak floors warm, walls off-white, and let the stained-glass hallway be the artwork.

Perfect for

  • Victorian terraces and semis mid-renovation
  • Households zoning kitchen from hall without losing light
  • Lovers of the grey-and-brass London look
  • Cooks wanting period character with modern storage

Avoid if

  • Open-plan totality is the goal — the screen exists to zone
  • Steel glazing costs would starve the cabinetry budget
  • You want colour drama rather than tailored neutrals

Frequently AskedQuestions

Brass — cup pulls on drawers, knobs on doors — is the classic warm counter to slate greys. Choose unlacquered finishes if you want the living patina; lacquered if you want day-one shine forever.

A black steel-framed glazed partition, originally industrial windows. Interior versions share daylight between rooms while keeping zones, noise and heat separate — often the highest-impact single move in terrace renovations.

Marble subway laid in running bond carries both heritage and polish; its grey veining bridges painted cabinetry and stone counters. Porcelain marble-look versions serve the hard-water household equally well.
